Location: The Chapel of the Adelaide West Uniting Church

Theme: Is the Bible the Word of God?

Presentation by: Peter Whiting

Christians claim that the Bible is the Word of God, and Muslims claim that the Qur’an is the true Word of God. So what constitutes the ‘Word of God’? Do both books contain the Word of God? Do we believe that all Scripture is inspired by God? At our March presentation we will also explore statements such as ‘God doesn’t write books’ and ‘the Bible is not the Word of God - Jesus is the Word of God’. So bring along your thoughts and ideas to add to the discussion.

Theme: What can Christians learn from the Buddhist Faith?

Presentation by: Lyndy Abram, Director, Buddha House, Magill

Speaker Biography: While travelling through Buddhist countries on the 'hippy trail' in 1976-7, I wanted to gain more understanding of Buddhism. As a result I attended a month-long retreat in Nepal with two Tibetan Lamas who spoke English. Upon returning to Adelaide, I invited Lama Yeshe to teach here in 1981 and we started Buddha House. I have been in the role of Director and Spiritual Program Coordinator many times over the last 44 years, whilst bringing up a family, studying at university, and having a rewarding career working at the Cancer Council running the Quitline, developing programs for people quitting smoking, and health workers supporting quitters. I have been the Director of Buddha House this time for nearly eight years.

About the Adelaide West Progressive Christianity Group
The Adelaide West Progressive Christianity Group meets in the Chapel of the Adelaide West Uniting Church on the third Wednesday evening of odd months, at 7:00 p.m. for a Service of Worship, usually led by one of the following Moderators:
  • Reverend Esmond Dowdy
  • Mr Gabriel Rivara
  • Mr Peter Whiting
Each Service will have a theme related to one or more of the Goals of Progressive Christianity

In lieu of a sermon, there will be a Speaker or a group of Speakers, sometimes from within the Group and sometimes an invited Guest Speaker(s)

The whole Service will have been designed by the Worship Leader in consultation with the Speaker(s) to form a consistent whole

After the presentation, a Discussion Moderator will convene a Q&A and general discussion on the theme of the Service

The Benediction is supposed to be given at 8:00 p.m., but often the discussion runs over time!

Following the Service, there will be a light supper, kindly provided by Lesley Ashman

Worshippers are asked to make a small donation of your determination towards the Group's running costs

Guests are always welcome at the Progressive Christianity Services!

The program of speakers and themes is determined by the Program Group:
  • Reverend Esmond Dowdy
  • Mr Gabriel Rivara
  • Mr Peter Whiting
